Cruise Drink Packages Compared (2026): What They Cost and When They're Worth It

Every major cruise line's drink package broken down by price, what's included, restrictions, and exactly how many drinks you need to break even. An honest take from a cruise specialist.

Quick Answer: Are Cruise Drink Packages Worth It in 2026?

Short answer: A cruise drink package is worth it if you'll have 5 or more drinks per day (including specialty coffees, fresh juice, and bottled water). The cheapest package is MSC Easy Plus at $55 to $70 per day. Norwegian's Free at Sea and Celebrity's Always Included pricing bundle a package into the fare and are almost always the best value when offered. Disney is the only major line with no drink package at all.

Below: every major cruise line's 2026 drink package compared on price (with gratuity), per-drink limits, daily caps, what you actually get, and the break-even math by drink count.

Drink Package Comparison: All Major Lines at a Glance

Prices include the line's mandatory gratuity (typically 18 to 20 percent), which gets added at checkout and surprises a lot of first-time cruisers. The "Break Even" column shows roughly how many alcoholic drinks per day you need to come out ahead, assuming an average $11 to $13 per drink at retail.

How to Tell If a Drink Package Is Worth It (The Honest Math)

The break-even number is usually 5 to 8 alcoholic drinks per day. Sounds easy if you're picturing a beach vacation, but here's the honest reality: most cruisers underestimate their break-even because they forget about non-alcoholic drinks.

On every package above, you also get unlimited specialty coffee, fresh juice, bottled water, smoothies, mocktails, and premium sodas. If you grab a latte at breakfast ($5), a fresh juice mid-morning ($6), a frozen mocktail at the pool ($9), and bottled water with dinner ($4), you've already covered $24 of value before your first cocktail. Two cocktails (around $26) and you've covered the package.

Rule of thumb: If you'll have 4+ alcoholic drinks per day OR you're a heavy specialty coffee and bottled water drinker, the package usually pays for itself.

The 'Free at Sea' Trick on Norwegian and Celebrity

Norwegian almost always runs a "Free at Sea" promotion that includes the Premium Beverage Package as a "free" perk. It's not really free: there's a 20 percent gratuity tacked on (about $20 per person, per day), so a 7-night cruise adds about $280 to your bill at the end. But that's still 60 to 70 percent cheaper than buying the same package outright at $109 per day plus gratuity.

Celebrity does something similar with their "All Included" or "Always Included" pricing tier, which bundles the Classic Drink Package, Wi-Fi, and gratuities into the cabin fare. On almost every Celebrity sailing, this comes out cheaper than booking the lower tier and adding the package separately. Always price both.

The catch on every line: If two adults share a cabin, both must purchase the package (or both must take the "Free at Sea" perk). You cannot buy a package for just one cabin guest.

Common Restrictions That Catch People Off Guard

The "both adults" rule. Mentioned above but worth repeating: every line requires all guests 21+ in the same cabin to purchase the same package. The cruise line cross-references your folio.

Drink price limits. Royal Caribbean caps included drinks at $14 (or $15 on newest ships), Norwegian at $15, MSC at $9. Premium spirits, top-shelf cocktails, and bottle service are extra.

One drink at a time. Most lines require finishing your current drink (or returning it) before ordering another. You can't order three margaritas at once.

Daily caps. Carnival caps Cheers! at 15 alcoholic drinks per day. Princess Plus and Premier cap at 15. Royal Caribbean and Norwegian have no daily cap.

Private islands and ports. Drinks at private islands (Perfect Day at CocoCay, Castaway Cay, Half Moon Cay) are typically included. Drinks in ports of call are not.

Specialty venues. A few high-end venues (Champagne bars, certain wine flights) may not be included even with the top package.

    What's Included Beyond Alcohol

Every major drink package includes more than just cocktails. Here's what's typically covered:

    • Specialty coffees (lattes, cappuccinos, espressos) at coffee bars and main dining
    • Fresh squeezed juice and premium juices
    • Bottled water (large and small)
    • Premium sodas including Coke, Sprite, Red Bull (Cheers! includes energy drinks)
    • Smoothies and frozen mocktails
    • Hot tea, iced tea, hot chocolate
    • Beer, wine by the glass, cocktails up to the per-drink cap

On Disney (no package available), the same items are mostly included anyway: free soda fountain, juice, smoothies, hot chocolate, and self-serve ice cream are complimentary all day. Only alcohol is charged a la carte.

    Money-Saving Tips That Actually Work

Pre-cruise sale. Royal Caribbean, Carnival, and Norwegian all run pre-cruise sales (typically 20 to 40 percent off) for packages purchased before sailing. Watch your account 30 to 60 days before sailing.

Free at Sea on Norwegian. Almost always cheaper than buying the package after booking. Make sure you select it at booking; switching after isn't always possible.

Celebrity's Always Included. Almost always cheaper than the cruise-only fare plus add-ons. Don't book the cheaper tier without comparing.

Princess Plus or Premier. Bundles drinks, Wi-Fi, gratuities, and (on Premier) specialty dining and crew appreciation. Often $30 to $50 per day cheaper than buying components separately.

Skip the package on short cruises. On 3 to 4 night sailings, light drinkers are usually better off paying as you go. The math gets favorable around night 4 or 5.

Free at Sea on Norwegian for non-drinkers. If you don't drink, swap the beverage perk for unlimited Wi-Fi, the specialty dining package, or shore excursion credits. Same dollar value, more useful for you.

Book through a travel advisor. Group rates and travel-advisor-only promotions sometimes include drink packages or cabin upgrades that aren't visible online. I do this for free.

    Which Lines Make Drinks Easiest?

Easiest to include drinks: Norwegian (Free at Sea) and Celebrity (Always Included). Both bundle a quality drink package into base pricing on most sailings.

Best value if you have to pay separately: MSC Easy Plus at around $55 to $70 per day, or Carnival Cheers! at $70 to $80 per day with no per-drink limit up to $20.

Best free options without buying a package: Disney (free soda, juice, smoothies, hot chocolate). MSC's basic fare includes some non-alcoholic options.

Premium experience: Royal Caribbean's Deluxe Beverage Package has the widest spirit selection and no daily cap, making it best for cocktail enthusiasts who'll have 8+ drinks per day.

How Much Do Cruise Drink Packages Cost? (2026 Prices)

Here's how much cruise drink packages cost per person, per day in 2026, with the cruise line's mandatory 18 to 20 percent gratuity already included. These are the all-in numbers you'll see on your final bill, not the pre-gratuity advertised rates.

Cruise LinePackageCost Per Day7-Night Total (per person)
    Royal CaribbeanDeluxe Beverage$85 to $105$595 to $735
    CarnivalCheers!$70 to $80$490 to $560
    NorwegianPremium Beverage$0 to $25 (Free at Sea)$0 to $175
    MSCEasy Plus$55 to $70$385 to $490
    CelebrityClassic / Premium$0 to $89 (Always Included)$0 to $623
    PrincessPlus / Premier$65 / $85 (bundled)$455 / $595

Prices vary by sailing and are typically 20 to 40 percent cheaper if you buy during the pre-cruise sale (usually 30 to 60 days before sailing) versus purchasing once onboard.

Cruises With Drinks Included in 2026

If you want cruises with drinks included in the base fare (no separate drink package to buy), three lines do it best in 2026:

    1. Norwegian Cruise Line (Free at Sea). Norwegian's Free at Sea promotion runs on nearly every sailing and includes the Premium Beverage Package as one of the included perks. There's still a 20 percent gratuity charge (about $20 per person, per day, or $140 per person on a 7-night), but the package value itself ($109/day at retail) is included with the cruise fare. This is the closest thing to a true all-inclusive cruise at mass-market prices.

    2. Celebrity Cruises (Always Included). Celebrity's Always Included pricing tier bundles the Classic Drink Package, basic Wi-Fi, and gratuities into the cruise fare. The upgraded All Included tier includes the Premium Beverage Package and faster Wi-Fi. Compare both tiers to the cruise-only fare plus add-ons because Always Included almost always wins on total cost.

    3. Virgin Voyages (mostly inclusive). Virgin includes basic non-alcoholic drinks, gratuities, all dining (no specialty upcharge), and Wi-Fi in the base fare. Alcohol is the only thing they charge separately, and you can prepay with a Bar Tab that gives bonus credit.

    4. All luxury lines. Regent Seven Seas, Silversea, Seabourn, Crystal, and Oceania (NauticaClub) all include drinks in the fare. Pricing starts around $500 to $800 per person, per day, so this is a different category of cruise.
