1. Have you personally sailed this ship? Cruise ships are enormous and each cabin category has quirks. Reading brochures isn't the same as knowing which Deck 10 cabins are under the pool deck.
2. Do you charge any service or planning fees? A real cruise agent is paid by the cruise line and shouldn't charge you. Some charge planning fees to lock in your business, watch for that.
3. Do you monitor my fare for price drops? This is the single most valuable thing an agent does. If the line drops the fare between booking and final payment, a good agent rebooks you at the lower price.
4. Will I work with you directly, or with a team? Larger agencies pass you to whoever is available. That's not the same as one advocate who knows your booking.
5. What happens if something goes wrong at the port? Missed transfer, wrong dining time, cabin category changed. The best travel agents pick up the phone at 9pm the night before you sail.
