Every week a client asks me some version of: 'Do I need to bring a suit?' or 'Are shorts okay at dinner?' The honest answer is somewhere between the cruise line's marketing photos and what people actually wear.
Here's what each major line really expects at dinner in 2026, and what to pack so you're never the underdressed or overdressed one at the table.
Smart casual nights (most nights on most lines)
Smart casual is what you'll wear 4-5 nights out of a 7-night cruise. Men: collared shirt, chinos or dark jeans, closed shoes. Women: a sundress, a nice blouse with pants, or a casual dress.
What you can skip: shorts, athletic gear, swim cover-ups, flip flops. The main dining room enforces these. The buffet doesn't care.
Formal or 'cruise elegant' nights
On a 7-night cruise you'll typically have 2 'formal' or 'cruise elegant' nights. The reality: a sport coat and chinos for men is plenty. A cocktail dress, jumpsuit, or nice top with dressy pants works for women.
Tuxedos and ball gowns happen, but it's a minority. Don't pack a tux unless you'd wear one to a wedding.
Line-by-line dress code reality
- Royal Caribbean: 'casual' most nights, 1-2 'dress your best' nights per week. Most guests skew dressy-casual.
- Carnival: 'cruise casual' (shorts okay at buffet, not main dining), 1-2 'cruise elegant' nights.
- Norwegian (Freestyle): no formal nights. Smart casual nightly. You can wear shorts in main dining on most ships.
- Celebrity: 'evening chic' nights skew dressier. Sport coat or nice dress recommended on chic nights.
- Disney: pirate night, formal night (1 night on 7-night sailings), and themed nights. Family-friendly throughout.
- MSC: traditional Italian formality, 1-2 gala nights per week, generally dressier overall.
Packing list (7-night cruise)
- 5 smart-casual outfits (mix collared shirts, sundresses, nice tops)
- 1-2 dressy outfits (sport coat or cocktail dress)
- 1 pair dress shoes, 1 pair walking shoes, 1 pair pool shoes
- Day clothes: swimsuits, cover-up, shorts, tees
- Light layer (cabins and dining rooms run cold)
