It's the easiest cruise port to fly into in North America. FLL airport is literally next door, you can land at 10am and be on the ship by 11:30. That alone saves a hotel night for many cruisers.

Sometimes. Many cruisers fly into FLL and stay in Miami the night before. Drive time between PortMiami and Port Everglades is 30-45 minutes, but Florida traffic on cruise day can stretch that.

PortMiami has the newest, biggest ships (Icon, Utopia, Virgin). Port Everglades has more premium and longer-itinerary ships (Princess, Holland America, Celebrity). For a first cruise, Miami is more dramatic; for a transatlantic or 14-day Caribbean, Fort Lauderdale wins.
